Research and practice has clearly revealed that the mental side of performance is critical, not only to success, but to psychological well-being. In fact, when physical abilities are similar the outcome of the competition often comes down to the mental side of performance. Literally hundreds of athletes and teams have employed sport psychology consultants to help improve performance and enhance personal growth and well-being. These sport psychologists help both athletes and teams achieve their goals and aspirations and thus perform to their full potential. One important theme across athletes and teams is that they are interested in enhancing performance. The end result might be communicating better with coaches/teammates, dealing with pressure to perform well, setting realistic goals, managing energy, maintaining concentration, coping with failure/setbacks, getting mentally prepared for competition, or having confidence in your abilities. An additional focus is to enhance the psychological well-being and personal growth of athletes so that the skills they learn in sport can transfer to their personal, business or academic lives.
